Are allergy shots safe?

My son has seasonal allergies. I want to get him an allergy shot. Are allergy shots safe?

Allergy shots are safe but require many shots over time to build up a dose that will cause his allergies to go away. The one shot allergy is a usually a steroid shot and I would not recommend he receive that.

The reaction rate with aeroallergen immunotherapy or allergy shots is <1%. Patients usually wait at least 30 min in the clinic after a shot. The allergy shots initially are very diluted as they are almost water and build up from there. Most allergy clinics will require him to take an antihistamine before the shot on the day of the shot, which increases the threshold of having a reaction.
