Are wisdom tooth abscesses very painful?

My doctor warned me about using straws because I could get an abscess. What exactly is a wisdom tooth abscess? Do they hurt a lot?

Typically, straw use should be avoided *after* an extraction. Suction can remove the clot (or scab) from the socket where the root had been. That condition is known as "dry socket" and is typically extremely painful. Placement of the correct medication by a dentist in the socket provides almost immediate relief. Any teeth, including wisdom teeth, can get an abscess of the nerve or of the gum around the tooth. No abscess feels good.
If food gets trapped in the opening under the gum it can become infected
That can be extremely painful. But are you talking about an actual abscess with an existing wisdom tooth, or an infection resulting from a wisdom tooth extraction? What you're describing seems to be the second.
