Family Practitioner Questions CT Scans

Is a CT Scan safe for kids?

The doctor has recommended a CT Scan for my child to diagnose the reason for his convulsions. Is it safe to do a CT scan for children?

I would not suggest that.
It is recommended to have less than 2 brain CT’s under age 21 due to a slight increased risk of brain cancer, so I would have your child consult with a neurologist to see if they could order your child a brain MRI in its place.
It does expose the child to radiation, which can be harmful if he or she gets many more radiation exposures over years. If it is necessary for diagnosis and treatment, then it would be worth the risk.
