Can I take a lower metformin dose due to fasting?

I have been taking metformin 500 mg twice daily for 6 months and have noticed an improvement in my menstrual cycles and general wellbeing. However, I will be fasting for the month of Ramadan. Can I take only 500 mg once a day, at sunset when breaking my fast? I have the option to take 500 mg in the morning before starting the fast, but I fear I could get hypoglycemia.

I have gotten a blood sugar crash (dizzy, headache) a few times because I did not eat a snack between meals, but I have never gotten this when fasting. Background info: 20F, height-156 cm, 41 kg, BMI 18(I eat well, but I cannot put on weight, possibly, due to genetics). I do not drink/smoke/take drugs.

It depends on why you are on Metformin. Definitely discuss this with your provider. Generally hypoglycemia is not an issue with Metformin but if you are fasting you may need to adjust.
