“Can a chiropractor or massage therapist help with migraine headaches?”
I am an 18 year old female. I want to know if a chiropractor or massage therapist can help with migraine headaches?

First determine if you have a true migraine as opposed to another type of headache. Second, Is there an aura or neurologic symptoms? Chiropractic will help with tension type-migraines. However, with a true migraine w or w/o aura it may help reduce the migraine days and pain/intensity.
Chiropractic adjustments are one of the very best things you can do to eliminate migraine headaches!
Chiropractic adjustments are the best way to fix a migraine because they correct the root cause of the migraine.
That's a great question. Typically a Chiropractor will work with the overall structure of the spine, mostly the vertebrae. A Massage Therapist works with tight and tense muscles. Migraines can be caused by a lot of different factors. I have seen many patients have their migraines decrease in frequency and severity over the years.
It really depends on the cause of your migraine headaches. If they are caused by increased tension in the suboccipital area (below the base of your skull in back) or tension in the trapezius muscle that connects to the back of the skull and those muscles are increasing pressure on the greater occipital nerve, then both types of treatment would be beneficial. Massage is good at relieving tension in the muscles. Chiropractic manipulation can relieve misalignment of the vertebrae, which may be causing interference to the nerve and cause the muscle tension to begin with. It is always good to start with conservative treatments such as Chiropractic and massage to see if that treatment works for you. A good Chiropractor would be able to determine the cause of your headaches through examination and possibly X-rays, if necessary. After thorough examination, the provider should be able to recommend an effective treatment protocol.

Absolutely, both can! As long as there are no contraindications, chiropractic can help a lot. In fact, the reason I became a chiropractor is that one helped me with my migraines.
Since the brain has no nerves the therapist or chiropractor should easily be able to find the muscle knots in the neck which cause pain radiating into the head. If it's from body chemistry that has to do with serotonin synthesis, foods rich in serotonin may be useful especially if this occurs during your periods
Yes, in fact, chiropractors can help with migraine headaches, as well as other types of headaches such as tension headaches, cluster headaches, sinus headaches, etc.

In many cases, yes, a chiropractor can assist with migraines. But this is also dependent upon a vast array of variables that the doctor should assess when you come in to see them.

Yes, specifically a chiropractor who can analyze upper cervical alignment can be very helpful with getting relief from migraines.

Yes, we can help greatly with headaches. We are specially trained in diagnosing and treating migraines and other headaches.
Migraines can be absolutely debilitating and there are many potential causes, but chiropractic care and massage are often very helpful! Joint restrictions and tight muscles in your neck can be causes of migraines and chiropractic care can absolutely help relieve them.
Depending on your type of headaches there is a possibility that chiropractic and massage could help. I have personally helped many patients to lessen or completely alleviate their chronic headaches.

Tight neck and scalp muscles can cause headaches, I would check woth your doctor regarding your migraines if they are frequent and or severe. Chiropractic and massage together work well to lessen pain amd discomfort.
The first assumption that we are making is that your headache is caused by a migraine. There are many types of headaches, and your chiropractor may be able to help you identify the type of headache that is causing your discomfort. Then, depending on the type of headache, he can recommend treatment. Either way, a through history and examination would need to be done. A chiropractor will have the knowledge and skills to make a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. If the chiropractor feels like massage therapy can help you, he or she will make that recommendation.
