“Can a crown on an implant come loose?”
I got a crown on an implant. It feels loose. What should I do?

Yes, that is entirely possible. Some implant crowns are cemented onto metal posts or abutments. Often that type of attachment uses a lighter cement for the crown in case that the abundant loosens and the crown needs to be removed. If the crown is screwed in, it could loosen if the screw begins to unwind. Either way, you need to see a dentist to get it tightened or re-cemented. It is usually more of a bother than a big deal. On the other hand, if the crown appears to be loosening, but it is related to the implant failing, that is a big deal. Get to a dentist and have it figured out.

I would recommend seeing your dentist as soon as possible. Sometimes crowns can get loose and need to be either re-cemented or tightened if screw retained. Sometimes a crown may feel loose because the implant is moving around, which is much more of a serious problem.

Yes. A crown CAN become loose from an implant. But first, an explanation of what is coming loose. There are 3 parts to this restoration, the implant which is integrated into your jaw, the abutment which is attached to the implant, and the crown attached to the abutment. Most often the latter two are permanently attached together either by the lab or your dentist creating screw-retained restoration, meaning it is attached to the implant with a screw. Over the years, there have been some changes in the recommended torque value from 20NCm up to 35NCm. There are basically 2 ways it can loosen: 1-Through normal chewing, etc the screw loosens or 2- The cement fusing the crown to the abutment becomes debonded. In either case, the solution is simple and most dentists will only charge for an office visit at most. Best to see your dentist before it comes out completely if possible before adjacent or opposing natural teeth move creating a potentially more complicated and costly fix.

Yes. It depends on the type of restoration you have. If it is a screw-retained implant, the screw can loosen. The composite plug is removed to get access to the screw. The screw is tightened and the composite plug is replaced. If it is a cemented crown, then the crown is removed, cleaned internally, and re-cemented. If the actual implant is loose, the implant is failing. Please follow up with your restorative dentist immediately.
