Can chemotherapy cause anemia?

My daughter is getting chemotherapy. Can chemotherapy cause anemia?

1 Answer

Anemia is usually a condition of cancer because cancer causes an inflammatory response. This inflammation causes a decrease in red blood cell production. On top of that many chemotherapy treatments can suppress the making of new blood cells by the bone marrow. However, it can be managed with iron supplements, transfusions, and/ or medication to stimulate red blood cell production.
