Can hyperthyroidism go away?

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Can hyperthyroidism go away?

Hyperthyroidism does not go away on its own. It is generally controlled with medications and in some cases surgery. However, if the thyroid gland is completely removed, you will have a different problem called hypothyroidism. This is also controlled with medications. Often times inflammation will cause the thyroid activity to be high and then the inflammation will lead to this actually "burning out" and your thyroid will return to a normal level of activity or a low level that requires thyroid hormone supplements to help bring it back to a normal level. If a patient has symptoms from the high thyroid it needs to be treated and monitored. If the patient has no symptoms, it needs to be monitored.
