Psychiatrist Questions Depression

Depression and brain

I'm 20 and I have been depressed (also have OCD) for 7 years and I started treatment last year. I have used many antidepressants but I'm not treated yet. My memory has been so bad since my depression started. I want to know if depression damages your brain and memory permanently?

Untreated depression is linked to causing memory problems but memory improves with the optimum treatment of depression.
No.
No, the damage is not permanent. Once you recover from depression your memory will get back.
Sorry to hear you are going through this. Depression can affect some of the components that are involved in our memory. It can affect our sleep, our concentration, our motivation, our perception, and other factors that involve our cognition (brain functioning). Rest assured that depression does not damage our brain and memory in a permanent manner but it is important to address your depression before it impairs your life even further. There are ways to get better. You deserve it.
