Hematologist (Pediatric) Questions Iron supplements

Do I need to give my son iron supplements as he is growing?

My son is 11 years old and not the best eater. He's also smaller than most kids his age. Are iron supplements required for optimum growth in children?

No, he needs an evaluation and blood test to find the cause so as to be treated.
Not if he gets an iron-rich diet. If he is a poor eater as you say, he could get deficient. There has been an association between iron deficiency anemia and problems with learning.

Hello,

No you don’t need to give him iron supplements unless he has anemia, which is a low hemoglobin, which can be tested by blood work. If you are concerned about height, he can be evaluated by an endocrinologist.

Iron supplements like all other vitamins are essential for optimum health. If he is a picky eater, he may need a multivitamin with iron as each of those help with various aspects of our health and body. Deficiency of iron will cause anemia with feeling tired, shortness of breath and other issues.
