Every root canal case is different based on how much the crown integrity has been compromised. In general, overtime having a root canal makes the crown of the tooth more brittle and prone to breakage. Therefore, a root canal maybe indicated. Ask your dentist to inquire if your tooth will need a crown after the root canal and they are trained to answer that question and give you specific recommendations for your tooth.
If it is a back tooth, your dentist will suggest that you have a crown placed on the tooth after a root canal to protect the tooth as it will become brittle and will be vulnerable to breakage from strong chewing forces.
