Jaw surgery is performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Surgery is usually done under general anesthesia. Surgery takes place in the hospital and requires a two- to four-day stay.
Depending on the extent of surgery jaw alignment surgery is best performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia. This is best discussed with your oral surgeon.
Your surgeon will generally perform the surgery under general anesthesia in an operating room or surgical center. For lower jaw surgery your surgeon may instead perform the surgery in an office setting under intravenous sedation.
