You may not need one, but often it is a good idea to get an EGD (endoscopy) at least once to evaluate the inside of your stomach and esophagus.

Yes, endoscopy is really the only way to diagnose gastritis. But be careful because a finding of gastritis does not necessarily explain symptoms. This fact confuses many patients and doctors.
