I will have a bone marrow biopsy. Do you use local anesthesia for a bone marrow biopsy?

my preference is to use a generous amount of local anesthetic (Lidocaine). In some instances or practices, sedation is used.
A bone marrow biopsy is often done using sedation rather than anesthesia. The procedure is relatively quick and with local analgesia, pain is usually tolerable. However, many do choose to have sedation as well. We especially use sedation for children have a bone marrow biopsy.

Not usually a local , don’t think it would work much either as they go far down below the superficial ! I had 2 bone marrow biopsies with aspiration as a patient and nurse by career . But I remember someone asking on a Leukemia lymphoma society continuing education telephonic web class why they are not offered sedation when they get a bone mary biopsy and the expert giving the class said because you have to ask for it !! So when I went to the biggest cancer center in the country for a 2 nd opinion and needed a bone marrow biopsy I asked for sedation and I was told they would have to reschedule the procedure with anesthesia department but they could give me liquid Versed and that’s what I opted for . The other time I had one bilaterally it was under managed anesthesia . The one with the verses was better , I slept after and had no pain at the site afterwards , as the professional that did the procedure just did that all day long!
Yes, local anesthesia is used unless the patient has an allergy or has had
a reaction to the local in the past.

You are asking the question if local anesthesia is used for a bone marrow biopsy.
Generally a needle with a local anesthesia is used in the posterior pelvic area where the sample will be collected. The area will remain sleeping for a couple of hours after the sample is collected. If further discomort is felt Tylenol can be used for control of the discomfort.
