Does bursitis go away on its own?

I was diagnosed with bursitis. Is it serious? Does bursitis go away on its own?

Bursitis is inflammation of a tissue called bursa. Bursal tissue is found in many different parts of our body (you didn't specify where you have bursitis). Regardless, bursitis going away means that the inflammation resolves. That can happen spontaneously but if it does not it may require treatment which could be conservative or even operative if conservative treatment fails.
Bursitis is a condition that means inflammation of that specific bursa. The bursa acts as a cushion between the bone and tendon to minimize the friction. They can be in the shoulder, elbow, hip, or knee. Bursitis is the result of tight tendon or band of tissue like IT band for hip. The treatment is usually physical therapy to stretch out the tight tissue. You need to speak to your doctor and start PT. Bursitis usually doesn't go away.
Most true bursitis will go away on its own. However how quickly depends on age, location, cause. Treatment is decreasing aggravating activity, routine icing, light stretching and a short course of routine anti inflammatory. Sometime using a topical such as bio freeze, icy hot May be helpful. If not resolving over 3-6 weeks you should have it evaluated and other options reviewed. Good luck.
It depends on the reason for bursitis. Start with ice, rest and Nsaids. Appropriate strengthening exercise is key as well. I don't know what you define as serious but bursitis rarely requires surgery as a stand alone diagnosis.
