I will have a lumpectomy. Does everyone need radiation after lumpectomy?

It depends on the findings after the lumpectomy. We look at the pathology report and will decide on the need for radiation treatment.
Yes. Without radiation treatment, 50% of patients will have tumors come back in the breast.
Most patients with invasive or non-invasive breast cancer (DCIS) will receive radiation after a lumpectomy. However, this can be omitted in elderly patients with small tumors and that are estrogen receptor positive.
