OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions

Female issue

I have hsv 2, I been trying to find something to help with the pain when I use that bathroom. I had asked my pharmacist she suggested witch hazel or some type of numbing ointment. I’m not to sure if there is such otc.

It burns really bad when I urinate during urinating and for a little bit afterwards I have asked my pcp about this she tells me it’s normal but not much can be done n gives me the pills to help stop the outbreak that’s it.

I was hoping to maybe get some more insight on this.

The burning is from the urine contacting the skin where the herpes blisters are located. So, unless you can get the urine stream to come out straight without contacting the skin, you will continue to have discomfort. You can try to protect the skin with Vasoline or maybe Zinc Oxide 20%(like a baby salve to protect against diaper rash). A lidocaine jelly may help numb the area before you have to urinate.
There are several things you can do to help with the pain until the outbreak is over.
1. Use a peri-bottle to pour warm water over the genital area when you are urinating. This will dilute the urine and make is less painful.
2. If you are at home, you can fill the bathtub with enough water to cover the genital area and urinate in the tub. Wash the area gently and rinse the tub when you are done.
3. Witch Hazel pads are available over the counter and may help a bit.
4. You can request 2% lidocaine gel to apply topically to the affected area to numb it up prior to urination.
There are anesthetics that can be taken orally but they will have to be prescribed for you.
