Dermapathologist Questions Dermatologist

Finger and toenails growing abnormally?

I have Limited Systemic Scleroderma, Raynaud’s, Sjogren’s, and also Interstitial Lung Disease from the Scleroderma. I also have a multi-nodal goiter in the thyroid, but all thyroid tests come back within range. Several of my fingernails are growing at strange angles. My rheumatologist could not provide an explanation and I have scoured the internet looking for nail issues that look like mine, but have not found any.

Scleroderma and interstitial lung disease can both have a profound effect on nail growth and appearance. I have never encountered curved nails but I suspect that your underlying conditions are contributing factors.

It may be due to some of the medications you are on. Our hair and nails are very sensitive to medications and disease states. Also, some of your autoimmune status can affect nail growth.
