Gout is an inflammatory arthritis and common in post menopausal women. Until menopause women are usually protected from gout due to the fact that Estrogen helps excreting the uric acid. Gout is caused by supersaturation of uric acid crystals which will be deposited in joints and causes inflammatory arthritis with severe pain, swelling, inflammation and decreased range of motion. Symptoms start acutely and reach to maximum intensity in 24 hour period and affected joint can not even bear touching with a bed sheet, pants sleeve etc. Can not weight bear and not able to walk.

Colchicine alone can not treat gout since it can not decrease uric acid crystal load in the body. It help to alleviate acute gout if taken with in 24 hours and also helps prevent gout when taken in conjunction with Allopurinol which is the medication that will decrease the production of uric acid in the body. Round circles are called tophi. Either allopurinol or Febuxostat help decrease Uric acid production in the body and eventually help reduce the size of the tophi.

Your mother needs to see a Rheumtologist for evaluation and treatment of gout.

Rheumatoid arthritis also mimics gout and vice a versa. So right diagnosis is the key for right treatment.
