No generally you are supposed to continue the current dose you were on (unless you started it within a couple days of the flare up- not if you had been on it for a while weeks-months or more at that dose), the flare should be treated symptomatically so you feel comfortable and when that is resolved you should get another uric acid check a couple weeks after for accurate results. Goal is under 6 or low 6's unless you have skin tophi (bumps of crystal) and the goal is then 5. Dr. Friedman
no. flares are common in the first 6-12 months as the doctor slowly increases the dose of allopurinol to get and keep your uric acid at or below 6
never stop Allopurinol during a gout attack. You should continue to take alopurinol. See your doctor for treatment of acute flare and when that subsides, you may need to increase the dose of allopurinol to prevent further gout attacks from occuring. Always consult with your doctor before starting or stopping any medications.,
There should be no changes made you uric acid lowering drugs during the flare. Means continue taking the Allopurinol at the current dose. If you continue to have flare discuss with your doctor if a need in the medication is needed or not.
