My wife's hemoglobin is low and she was referred to an oncologist. What should we expect?

They will check more labs to see if it's due to iron deficiency or other causes. May recommend colonoscopy or other tests.

Depends on what kind of Anemia, iron def- will need iron injection
I’m sure you are referred to the hematologist/oncologist for a better and detailed evaluation of why the hemoglobin is low. There’s multiple other labs that would need to be drawn for me to come to any degree of a conclusion about what to and or not to expect. Simply put, blood tests are in order, and it would not surprise me in the least if they want to do a bone marrow biopsy in order to make sure that the blood is being made and not being lost or being broken down because of another illness. It’s too early to start concerning and/or worrying about something that hasn’t taken place yet. Get all the data and do not be afraid to ask as many questions as you need in order for you to feel comfortable when you leave. I tell patients to bring a pen and paper with them so they can write things down so they can remember it when they get home. I wish you and your wife the best of luck and thank you for asking for my input.
