Hiccups after coughing from cold

My husband has gotten hiccups now for two days and only when he coughs hard he's never had this before from a cold but has had separately a day where his hiccups wouldn't stop and hurt. It will stop but comes back when he has the urge to cough and get up mucus. It hurts and is uncomfortable he can't even eat.

Coughing is a trigger for hiccups, which is a spasms of the diaphragm muscle. This does not indicate a stomach or intestinal problem. If the cough can be controlled then the hiccups should abate.
