“How accurate are CT scans for kidney stones?”
I am a 47 year old male. I want to know how accurate are CT scans for kidney stones?

Most renal stones are composed of calcium, and are readily identified on CT exams. Stone of other composition are rare, and may not be accurately identified by less experienced interpreters.
A CT scan is very accurate at detecting radiopaque findings such as calcium or other metals. I would prefer a CT scan over an X-ray or ultrasound if the kidney stone is a few millimeters in size as it can be missed on those studies or obscured by overlying bowel gas and stool rendering the exam suboptimal.
