OCD typically has an underlying cause or thought process behind it. Family therapy may help to bring some of these to awareness and investigate the role family dynamics may have on the individual with OCD.
OCD is best treated with Exposure and Response Prevention Treatment, which research has proven is the most effective treatment method. Family members can best help an individual with OCD by educating themselves on the disorder and avoiding reinforcing the obsessions/ compulsions when interacting with the family member.
Therapy can help manage OCD symptoms with new and improved skills, the family therapist helps to create a home atmosphere that will prevent the OCD symptoms from reemerging.
