“How do I know when I need cataract surgery?”
I am a 52 year old male. I wonder how can I know when I need cataract surgery?

When you suffer from starbursts and haloes around lights at night, glare from the sun during the day, contrast problems on a rainy day while driving, or blurry vision in either eye, you are ready for cataract surgery. This assumes there is no other cause for the decreased visual acuity. See an ophthalmologist. SO

Cataract surgery is done when a cataract decreases vision enough to affect a person's activities of daily living. If your cataract decreases your vision to the point where you are having difficulty driving, reading, or do other activities you do daily, then it is time to have cataract surgery. General rules of thumb are when your vision is worse than 20/50, even when wearing glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision. If you have poor vision but the reason for the poor vision is not the cataract, then removing the cataract may not improve the vision.
You know you need cataract surgery when your vision (with correction by glasses or contact lenses) is inadequate for your activities of my living.
