The most important thing is to stay hydrated. Unless you are on fluid restrictions, you should try to have a fluid intake of 64 oz a day-- that is 8-8oz glasses of fluid. Reduce caffeine intake because caffeine will dehydrate you. Hot decaffeinated honey and lemon tea can also help with your cough. Hydration will thin the mucus and phlegm. Inhaling steam can also calm the cough. While drinking the honey and lemon tea you can inhale the steam. You will get a two-fold benefit. Suck on hard candy when you feel the tickle or start to cough, or a honey and lemon cough drop. Sugar free if possible. Blow your nose to remove any nasal drainage that might be triggering the cough. You can also use an over the counter guaifenisen like Mucinex, or Robitussin, or Vicks 44 if your cough is keeping you awake at night. Coughing is necessary to clear the bronchial tubes and lungs of mucus and infiltrates, and helps prevent bacterial infections. Anyone with asthma or other lung diseases need to cough. As your lungs are getting stronger, you should practice breathing techniques. Breath in slowly and deeply, trying to breath deeper each time, then slowly expelling the breath. Start with 10 an hour and increase as your lungs start to move more freely. Not only are you increasing your lung capacity but your moving oxygen through your body feeding your cells.
