Hi there, unfortunately, I'm unable to provide you the best answer without doing proper diagnostics for your patient. I would recommend bringing your dog to see their primary care doctor, so they can perform a cranial drawer test to see if they have one of the most common knee injuries (cranial cruciate ligament tear). In addition, they would likely want to perform bloodwork and diagnostic imaging to ensure they will be a successful candidate for surgery and to see if there are any other fractures or meniscus tears. If it is solely the ligament tear, you can treat this with pain medications and strict bed rest for 6-8 weeks (or more depending on how strict the bed rest was). However, there is less of a chance for the leg to return to almost full/complete function if taken this route opposed to surgery.
