Physical therapy helps relieve pain in several ways. They apply modalities like heat, ice pack, diathermy or electrical stimulation. They guide you in stretching exercises to help increase range of motion, decrease tightness or muscle contraction and strengthen the muscles which support your shoulder joint. When the muscles around the joint are stronger then the joint can move with less pain, despite the presence of things like osteoarthrits. Physical therapists use deep heat modality such as therapeutic ultrasound and electric stimulation to ease shoulder pain. To restore functional range of motion is important to radically ease shoulder pain and therefore range of motion exercise and gentle stretching should be emphasized. Acupuncture before stretching may improve your tolerance to the therapeutic program.
Chronic pain goes beyond your original injury. Physical therapy can not only help with any physical reasons for your pain, but can also help with changing your mindset and adopting practices to help make your nerves less nervous. Not all physical therapists are trained in this. I also incorporate yoga breathing, meditation and philosophy with physical therapy to improve results. Hi,

Physical therapy is great for shoulder pain. One of the reasons we get shoulder pain is that the rotator cuff muscles get weak or torn. The rotator cuff muscles are the most important muscles for keeping our shoulder joint space open. When these muscles are torn or weak the space gets smaller and tighter and things inside such as the tendons get irritated and inflamed. Strengthening these muscles helps to open the space and decrease inflammation. There are other things to help in addition to physical therapy.
Rehab is surprisingly good for chronic shoulder pain.
Often yes. Instability is a common cause. Sometimes a proper diagnosis & treat/injection is needed before PT can ultimately help.
