By evaluating the bony structures of the joint which can be altered by problems within the joint. An MRI is often times also required to visualize the meniscus (disc) within the joint as it will not show up on an x-ray.

TMD, or Temporomandibular Disorder, is generally a clinical diagnosis, but the diagnosis can be aided by diagnostic X-rays, CT scan, or an MRI.
