Hyperthyroidism (HTH) causes increased thyroid hormone being produces and released. The uptake of iodine by the thyroid is 2-4 times increased in HTH. Radioactive iodine is taken up like regular iodine and because of its beta emissions, it kills thyroid cells. There has been no increased incidence of cancer after therapy.
