This is a case-by-case situation. A proper diagnosis must be made to determine if it is periodontal disease, trauma, pathology, an allergic reaction, etc. please visit a periodontist for a consultation.
The cause could be irritation due to infection. Brushing lightly and flossing could help until you consult with your dentist and he can evaluate the cause of the pain.
There are many reasons why the gums can hurt. You have to see your dentist. You may have something stuck that needs to be cleaned out.
The first step is to get your teeth cleaned
That depends on why they are hurting.  If you have not seen a dentist for recent evaluation and your gums are hurting for no known reason, you should make an appointment for an evaluation. Jesse A Grimm DDS.
