It is not the norm but it is a risk of general anesthesia. Some risk factors include being female, history of motion sickness, type of surgery, family or personal history of post-op nausea and vomiting. There are many techniques to try to prevent this. It should only last about 24hrs after surgery if you experience it. Hope that helps!
Vomiting is a common side effect after anesthesia. You must make your anesthesiologist aware so your anesthesia can be adjusted There are certainly better antiemetics available today and certainly some medications to be avoided for lessened There are certain surgeries that are more prone to vomiting than others but be sure your anesthesiologist knows the severity of you n/v and if prolonged and with what type of surgeries
Nausea and vomiting is unfortunately pretty common after general anesthesia. It can last as brief as 30 minutes to several hours. Much depends not only from the type of anesthetic but also the type of surgery you are having and the length of anesthesia you get. The main culprit for nausea and vomiting after anesthesia is the use of anesthesia gas and narcotics. In known severe cases, gas can be eliminated completely and iv drugs can substitute for general anesthesia, but it’s hard to eliminate narcotics when moderate to severe pain is expected upon awakening. There are some good anti nausea medicines that are usually given to all patients, but their effectiveness is still spotty. It depends. Very important to start eating lighter foods initially and advance the diet as tolerated. Usually the vomiting should subside in a couple of days.Sent from my Galaxy
There is no set time on how long vomiting lasts after genera anesthesia, but generally speaking should resolve in less than 24 hours.
It depends on the individual's physical condition. Generally, it lasts less than 24 hrs if it's caused by general anesthesia. Referring to a small set of people, who are super-sensitive to general anesthesia, the vomiting can last several days. Additionally, strong pain medication (such as oxycodone) carries the side effect of nausea and may cause further vomiting.
Post-op nausea and vomiting (PONV) are very common. PONV is normally over in two days even for people who have bad PONV. We have several medications and even different types of anesthesia to try to prevent it. Let your anesthesiologist know you have a history of it and what you remember them trying. Everybody gets one or two medications to prevent it. If I know it is a recurrent problem despite best efforts then I try additional medications.
It depends; can be interacting with drugs you are taking for medical conditions. If it persists, consult GI.
Post-operative nausea and vomiting typically last for 24-48 hours. Anything longer, and you should contact your surgeon.
