There are many different types of colon resections for multiple indications as well as different approaches to the surgery. Furthermore, timing depends on whether the patient has had previous abdominal surgery as well. Therefore, it is difficult to estimate how long surgery will take. It could vary from one hour to multiple hours depending on the answers to the above questions.
It depends of many factors, most of them being related to the patient. It is important what is the disease the resection is going to be made for, how urgent or emergent the operation is, any history of prior abdominal surgeries and wether the colon is blocked or not. Somewhat less important: the type of surgery, whether its laparoscopic or open, and the segment that needs to be removed.. My surgeries last between 45 minutes and 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
