Sciatica can improve over the course of 4 months. It can also become chronic and ongoing requiring treatment for many months or years. Surgery to decompress the nerve can help improve the symptoms much more quickly
Sciatica is usually due to a disc herniation or narrowing of the spinal canal or other rare causes. There are various nonsurgical options to try including physical therapy, NSAIDS, or pain management injection. Up to 80% of sciatica from disc herniation improves with time and conservative measures. In 20% non-responders, endoscopic surgery can be offered to help and patients do very well after surgery and in my practice will return to their normal life in 72 hours. Saeed S.
