For as long as you want straight teeth!
Our teeth, like the rest of our bodies, change over time. You will notice movement of your teeth over time which is due to the normal aging process and changes in the forces that are responsibly for tooth position. As such, wearing retainers 'full time' for 3-6 months, then nights through the first year after treatment is advisable. After that time, you can begin to ween yourself, but hoping your retainers in a couple of nights a week forever is your best bet to protect the work you and your orthodontist have done to create your new smile, not to mention protecting your investment!
Indefinitely.
As long as your orthodontist recommends it.

After your braces are removed, typically a retainer is given to wear. Your orthodontist or general dentist will tell you how long to wear the retainer, and let you know when you will transition to wearing the
retainer at night.

Thank you.

Hi, Typically we recommend 3-4 months full time, except when eating, but after that, it is important to wear them EVERY NIGHT FOREVER! Teeth tend to shift for the rest of your life unless you wear something to retain them. They want to go back to where they started.
Hi!

Forever! You should wear your retainers at night forever to prevent the teeth from crowding and moving out of position. As we age, our teeth will move and we need to hold them in place. A retainer is worn at night to help prevent what we call, relapse of the teeth.
