Hello, Thank you for the question. Addiction is very difficult as you are well aware and there is no "one size fits all" answer. Recovery requires intense effort, motivation and support as the challenge does not abate on its own. Please consider a certified counselor and program to assist in your journey. Best wishes, Dr. Chabbott
This is a great question. The answer depends on a few things: 1) How long the addictive use alcohol has been going on 2) How much and how frequently you use alcohol currently (in the last year) 3) How committed you are to making changes 4) What kinds of resources (time, money, social support) you currently have Generally speaking, the best way to get started is to explore a combination of individual therapy and/or family therapy alongside an outpatient program, 12-step community program, or other group therapy option. Research shows that getting both personalized and collective care is the best antidote to addiction. Motivation also matters a lot, so do your best to really think about why it is important for you to make changes and confront the addition. Good luck in your healing journey, Dr. Forest
Physical detox can be done pretty quickly, in a week- but the psychological addiction and craving is still there. You have to be ready to quit. Medications like naltrexone or campral can help with cravings on an ongoing basis. I prescribe them frequently and they really help.
