An awake colonoscopy can be uncomfortable due to the bloating and pressure that one experiences. In general, most colonoscopies are done with sedation, but it's not general anesthesia. So you are awake enough to breathe and respond to stimulus, but not aware of the pain and discomfort.
It depends on how sensitive your colon is and how difficult the procedure is. For some people, the discomfort is unbearable and colonoscopy cannot be done without sedation. But for others, it might cause mild discomfort only, with no sedation needed. Most people need sedation, however, because of pain during insertion of the colonoscope.
