After getting anesthetic for the procedure, it should not be painful at all. Your tooth may be slightly sensitive during the temporary crown phase.
It shouldn't really be painful if you get numb. You may have some pressure and discomfort around your gums for part of the procedure.
When they prepare a tooth for a crown they reduce all sides of the tooth about the thickness of a nickel. There is some slight soreness after but the procedure itself is painless, you will be fully numb and leave with a temporary crown to cover the exposed inner portion of tooth. Depending on why the crown is needed you may experience more post operative pain, such as a fractured tooth can be more sensitive due to the crack but typically if you are careful with your temporary crown and it stays on you will be fine with a couple Ibuprofen.
It should not be painful at to get a crown.
If you had root canal therapy on the tooth you have no nerve there anymore - there will be no pain at all. Your gums might be sensitive, but not the tooth. If you broke the tooth, or have a tremendous filling, and that's the reason for the crown, but you have not had root canal therapy (so the tooth is still vital) your dentist will be making you numb with an anesthetic - so you will have no pain in the tooth.
