General Practitioner Questions Pain killers

How safe are paracetamols while breast feeding?

I am 32 years old and I delivered my baby 1 month ago. Since the time I started feeding my baby, I am getting fever and headaches on and off. Are painkillers and paracetamols safe while I am feeding my baby?

May for a short time use a slightly lower dose.
You can take paracetamol; however, it appears in your breast milk in small amounts. It is unlikely to cause any harm to your baby. But, consider that long-term use of pain killers can cause side effects on your body such as kidney and liver damage.
Only small amounts of paracetamol is excreted in breast milk. When taken in prescribed dosage it is not likely to harm your baby. Other pain killers are best avoided during breastfeeding if possible.
Paracetamol is safe both for you and your child (via breast milk) if not taken more than 1 g four times daily. Painkillers are many different types, the only one that is quite safe is paracetamol (one case of eczema in the breast-fed infant after the mother taking paracetamol has been described).
