A normal heart rate for an 18 year old male is 60 to 100 beats per minute. When it is greater than 100 beats per minute doctors call this tachycardia. Therefore, a resting heart rate of 145 beats per minute accompanied by chest pain needs to be evaluated by a physician. There can be many causes of tachycardia. Your doctor will likely take a detailed history, examine you by listening to your lungs and heart, and might do an EKG. The most common reason for symptoms you are describing is an anxiety attack. Anxiety attacks in your age group are common. Cardiac problems at your age would be extremely rare. Most cardiac problems in childhood and early adult years are diagnosed much earlier. However, certain drugs such as Ritalin or illicit drugs such as cocaine can cause tachycardia. Lastly, there have been some reports of new onset tachycardia after COVID-19 immunization. This is extremely rare but possible. Lastly, myocarditis is another rare condition Myocarditis can cause increased heart rate, chest pain and shortness of breath. There is an increased risk of myocarditis after the second dose of the COVID immunization. If it were from the vaccine it would most likely occur within 2-3 days of the second dose.
