No, but these two modalities for treatment can work together. Interpersonal psychotherapy focuses on individuals who want to improve their social interactions and relationships. It's function is to address the present circumstances related to interpersonal issues to reduce symptoms and to build communication tools in a time limited format. Cognitive behavioral therapy CBT investigates your current decisions and unpacks with you unwanted cycles that you remain in. It is also a short term process that brings to our awareness that thoughts, feelings and behaviors are all connected. It's a place where cognitive distortions are confronted, challenged and replaced by something healthier. These two modalities are similar but different. They both can help to address conflicts in relationships, sustaining relationships, addressing changes in relationships and be a preventative treatment to reoccurring unwanted symptoms in these areas. IPT and CBT are evidence based therapies.
Yes and no. Ipt is personal while cpt is cognitive. So, emotional vs. mental. Example is ipt is working on communicating better with those close personally l. Cpt is mental exercises to change behavior. So ipt works.
Although they are somewhat alike, and they are both used in psychotherapy treatment, I do believe that there is a broader use with CBT than with IPT. Please understand that this is only my beliefs. I do suggest more research on your part for a better understanding.
Hi,

Thank you for your question. The two principal empirically-based psychotherapeutic interventions for mood disorders are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT). Both are diagnosis-targeted, time-limited, present-focused treatments that encourage the client to regain control of mood and functioning. IPT is based on the so-called common factors of psychotherapy: a treatment alliance in which the therapist empathically engages the patient, helps the patient to feel understood, arouses effect, presents a clear rationale and treatment ritual, and yields success experiences. On this foundation, IPT builds two major principles:

-Depression is a medical illness, rather than the patient's fault or personal defect; moreover, it is a treatable condition. This definition has the effect of defining the problem and excusing the patient from symptomatic self-blame.

-Mood and life situation are related. Building on interpersonal theory and psychosocial research on depression, IPT makes a practical link between the patient's mood and disturbing life events that either trigger or follow from the onset of the mood disorder.

I hope this has been helpful!

IPT and CBT are closely related. IPT is used mainly with young people who are having difficulty dealing with the social and interpersonal aspects of their lives. That includes issues such as shyness, communication skills, managing friendships, and dealing with conflict. What they have in common is a focus on the thoughts, beliefs, assumptions, expectations, and feelings that are causing the difficulties.
Hello and thank you for your question,

IPT is not a form of CBT. IPT is focused on interpersonal relationships whereas CBT is not.

Thank you,
