I will have a colonoscopy. Is anesthesia necessary for a colonoscopy?

No, but highly recommended. It can very uncomfortable.
While anesthesia is not necessary for a colonoscopy, intravenous anesthesia/sedation makes the procedure a lot more pleasant.
Mostly its done with IV sedation. Sometimes it could require either Monitored Anesthesia Care or even General anesthesia, especially in non cooperative patients.
