My friend was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Is bipolar disorder serious?

If gone untreated, the dx could lead to exacerbation of depressive and/or manic symptoms. Medication coupled with 1:1 individual therapy have proven to be effective measures with regard to overall sx reduction.
Bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose; many who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder may have other conditions. If the diagnosis is accurate, yes, it is a disorder that requires treatment and close follow-up. With proper treatment, however, one can lead a full life.
