Pulmonologist (Pediatric) Questions Childhood Asthma

Is childhood asthma curable?

Is there a cure for childhood asthma? Is it possible for it to just go away on its own?

It is treatable, and there are good chances for symptoms to get better as they grow. There is no cure for true asthma.
Some children will "outgrow" their asthma symptoms; however, it is important for parents to realize that asthma is a very serious, and possibly life-threatening disease that should not be taken lightly. Parent education regarding signs/symptoms of an asthma flare and steps of management are very important. With proper treatment and compliance, children with asthma can lead very productive, active lives.

Some childhood asthma is mildly intermittent, only triggered by viral illness, and these get less as a child gets older. Also, if the asthma is allergic, this can be managed with allergy shots and antihistamines and can improve or eventually go away. There may be a need to do pulmonary functions to make sure lung function is normal.
