It is real but it is not as common as you think. Most people just feel fatigue. Diarrhea, night sweats, etc. arent very common. It just means that the adjustments are helping your body release the toxins that it has been holding onto. I had it happen to me one time after an occiput adjustment (base of the skull) because it was my first adjustment there ever. I slept for about a day straight and then was good to go. For most people, toxic release doesnt happen.
