Gastric sleeve has less complications, but all Srurgeries carry risks.
Yes it is a surgery and anytime you have surgery it is serious..
A gastric bypass is a serious undertaking. A reputable surgeon will have you speak with both a dietician and a counselor (Not psychiatrist!), before surgery to see if you are capable of handling the changes and there will be a lot. Check the internet for resources from Mayo Clinic or Duke University who are knowledgeable sites.
