“Is teeth whitening bad for your mouth?”
I smoked and drank coffee for years but now I have quit both. I would like to whiten my teeth. Is this safe to do?

It depends on the condition of the gum and bone level of your tooth. You may try with over the counter whitening product first before you try whitening in the office.
The best and most effective time to whiten your teeth would be after a dental cleaning. The cleaning will remove all plaque, tartar, and staining, therefore eliminating any barriers between your teeth and the bleaching material.
Whitening is safe for patients that don't have any concerns with dental cavities or gum disease. If you have any of these problems, whitening could cause pain and sensitivity. I would have your dentist make sure that you don't have any decay or gum problems before whitening your teeth. But in a healthy, stable mouth, whitening is safe when done correctly and with the right type of whitening system for your needs!
Congratulations on stopping your smoking habit and good luck with no coffee. It is perfectly safe to whiten your teeth and there are a multitude of ways to accomplish that. Educate yourself on the various methods and even discuss options with your dentist.
