“Is there more than one type of allergy test?”
A lot of food allergies run in my family and I want to know what different type of food allergy tests are out there so I can make sure I'm safe.

Yes, there are several ways to test for allergies and the most appropriate test is usually based on several factors. Some of those factors are the types of the reaction, the suspected trigger and history of the patient, current medications they are on, risks/benefits of the test to name a few. This is a complicated discussion that will be most appropriately had with your allergies during a formal consultation. The physician will choose the proper test based on your presentation.
First of all not diagnose a food allergy on your own. Self-diagnosis can lead to unnecessary dietary restrictions and inadequate nutrition, especially in children. Additionally, some people think they are allergic to a food when they actually have another type of food disorder, and treatment may differ.
Some methods of food allergy testing are unproven and are considered controversial, since no definitive studies have shown that they can effectively diagnose food allergies. Some may even increase the risk of an allergic reaction.
While these tests alone do not always provide clear-cut answers, it will combine your test results with the information given in your medical history to provide a diagnosis. These tests may include:
1-Skin prick test
2-Blood test
3-Oral food challenge
4-Trial elimination diet
These tests are all proven diagnostic methods. Depending on your medical history and initial test results, you may have to take more than one test before receiving your diagnosis.
