A Gi specialist to evaluate swallowing and /or a neurologist for evaluation of possible myasthenia gravis.
You should return to LSU or get a consult at a Major Center like Emory, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, etc.
Gastroenterologist
Ok. Step 1 is usually to have a GI doctor perform an EGD (passing a lighted scope down his esophagus into the stomach) looking for problems that could impact swallowing. Often biopsies are taken during the procedure. Step 2: if this does not reveal the problem, then an ENT doctor can perform an exam of the throat area using a fibrotic scope. Often a CT scan of the head/neck is performed prior to or along with this procedure.
Patient needs to see GI specialist to get special images done and/or upper endoscopy.
There is a possibility that his inability to swallow is related to some thing other than MD. The doctors owe you a complete explanation of what they know and the diagnosis.
If the “MD” you are referring to is muscular dystrophy, then yes, the swallow issue is very likely related. If an evaluation by a speech pathologist has not been done, this could be considered, however, if this is MD causing the symptoms, then management of the MD is all that can likely be done. It's not easy to say without a thorough review of your husband's charts.
