Psychiatrist Questions

Medication Concern

I am on a medication, Quetiapine, it is supposed to help me with mood stabilization for my bipolar disorder as well as to help me fall asleep. I started off on 25mg which I was on for about 5 months, it helps me with falling asleep but I see and have had no change in my mood or manic episodes. Also, although it helps me go to sleep, when I am asleep I experience like outer body experiences I don't know how else to put it other than my body is asleep but my mind is awake.. I have voiced this to my doctor and she has now put me on 50mg of quetiapine.. I am still experiencing the same sleep issues, I still see no difference in my mood changes, I am not experiencing blurred vision and disorientation. I am forgetting things a lot more than normal. There are times I have to catch myself or hold on to something to walk. I am wanting to know your advice since my doctor will not listen, should I continue to take it and see if it helps like she is saying or slowly wing myself off and try something new?

Quetiapine is a derivative of Haldol and developed to treat schizophrenia. Lethargy/sleep is a side effect which many of my collogues then use as a sleep aide. I do not like the drug because of weight gain properties.
If you or someone you know is experiencing bipolar symptoms, it is strongly recommended to seek the assistance of a qualified psychiatrist. They will be able to prescribe an appropriate mood stabilizer to address the symptoms accordingly. It is important to note that Seroquel may not be the most effective mood stabilizer for some patients at a low dose. If you are not currently seeing a psychiatrist, we strongly advise you to consult one. We are available to assist you if you are located in Texas. Nbpsychiatry.com
